Empowering Sabah's Home-Based Entrepreneurs: The Rise of Badi Artisan By: Writer on-the-go Lorena Binisol

A Celebration of Creativity, Community and Entrepreneurial Excellence

In an era where entrepreneurship is increasingly driven by passion, creativity, and resilience, a remarkable movement is quietly reshaping Sabah's small business landscape. At the forefront of this transformation is Badi Artisan, a vibrant initiative dedicated to empowering home-based entrepreneurs, artisans, and creative talents who continue to enrich local communities through their craftsmanship and determination.

Officially launched for the first time at ITCC Penampang, Badi Artisan represents far more than a marketplace. It serves as a powerful platform where dreams are given visibility, talents are celebrated, and small businesses are provided opportunities to flourish.

Representing the Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of Industrial Development, Entrepreneurship and Transportation Sabah, Datuk Ewon Benedick, the event was officiated by Political Secretary II, Mohd Isquzawan Israq Arsit, whose presence underscored the State Government's commitment to nurturing entrepreneurship and supporting home-based businesses throughout Sabah.

The initiative aligns closely with the government's ongoing efforts to uplift small entrepreneurs through training programmes, skills enhancement initiatives, and long-term development strategies aimed at creating sustainable business ecosystems. More importantly, discussions continue surrounding the provision of dedicated and permanent spaces where entrepreneurs can consistently showcase and grow their businesses beyond temporary events.

A Vision Brought to Life

The driving force behind the event, Mary Jim, described Badi Artisan as a meaningful first step toward greater visibility and opportunity for local entrepreneurs.

"Every journey begins with a first step," she shared, emphasizing the importance of creating platforms where vendors can confidently present their products and services to the public.

Mary further expressed hope that future developments would include a permanent venue dedicated to local artisans and entrepreneurs, enabling them to promote their businesses continuously rather than relying solely on seasonal exhibitions and special events.

Her vision reflects a growing aspiration shared by many small business owners across Sabah: the desire for sustainability, accessibility, and long-term growth.

A Milestone for Sabah's Entrepreneurial Community

The event was proudly organized by the Sabah Eco and Social Entrepreneurs Development Association (SEED) under the leadership of its President, Datuk Aminah Ambrose.

Describing Badi Artisan as a proud milestone, Datuk Aminah commended Mary Jim's dedication and proactive leadership in transforming a vision into reality.

She highlighted that the initiative extends beyond commercial activity, serving as a confidence-building platform that empowers entrepreneurs to share their products with wider audiences while strengthening their economic futures.

For many participants, Badi Artisan was not simply an event. It was validation of their hard work, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit.

Wellness Meets Entrepreneurship

Among the event's standout participants was Monica Del Santos, a talented masseuse and nail care specialist whose wellness services quickly became a favourite among visitors.

Offering soothing body massages, manicures, and pedicures throughout the twelve-day showcase, Monica brought an element of relaxation and self-care to the vibrant marketplace atmosphere.

Her dedication throughout the event reflected the diverse range of services represented at Badi Artisan, proving that entrepreneurship extends far beyond traditional retail products.

Turning Passion into Purpose

Another inspiring entrepreneur was Rosmili Tati, a skilled seamstress and garment alteration specialist whose passion for sewing evolved into a thriving business opportunity.

What began as a personal hobby has blossomed into a professional service built upon craftsmanship, precision, and dedication.

For Rosmili, Badi Artisan provided the ideal platform to connect with customers, showcase her expertise, and demonstrate the value of locally crafted tailoring and alteration services.

Creativity Beyond Boundaries

Adding a unique literary dimension to the event was author and cartoon illustrator Langkawit, whose distinctive works combine humor, storytelling, and everyday observations.

Known for his witty cartoon sketches and engaging publications, Langkawit's creations captivated visitors by transforming ordinary moments into entertaining reflections of daily life.

His presence reinforced the event's central message that creativity exists in countless forms, from handmade crafts and personal services to literature, illustration, and artistic expression.

Preserving Culture Through Experience

Beyond entrepreneurship and commerce, Badi Artisan also celebrated Sabah's rich cultural heritage.

Visitors, particularly children, were invited to experience traditional cultural instruments, including the iconic gong. The rhythmic sounds resonating throughout the venue created a lively and memorable atmosphere while offering younger generations a meaningful connection to local traditions.

These cultural interactions transformed the event into more than a marketplace. They created an immersive community experience where heritage, creativity, and entrepreneurship coexisted harmoniously.

The Future of Badi Artisan

As Sabah continues to cultivate a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem, initiatives such as Badi Artisan represent an important step toward building a more inclusive and sustainable future for small businesses.

With the support of government leaders, community organizations, and passionate advocates such as Mary Jim and Datuk Aminah Ambrose, Badi Artisan has established itself as a promising platform for emerging entrepreneurs seeking visibility, growth, and opportunity.

More than an event, Badi Artisan symbolizes the spirit of Sabah's entrepreneurial community: resilient, creative, and ready to embrace a future filled with possibility.

As the first chapter of this inspiring journey concludes, one thing remains certain: the rise of Badi Artisan is only just beginning.
