Tucked within the vibrant pulse of Kota Kinabalu, Rumah Bumbu presents an inviting gateway into the rich tapestry of authentic Indonesian cuisine.

In a special preview session, Favstyle Essentials Editor-in-Chief, Alfred Allen Ginsos, graciously attended an exclusive invitation hosted by a long-time friend, Kathleen, fondly known as Cikgu Kath. Despite a demanding schedule, the visit unfolded as a meaningful reunion, blending business, nostalgia, and culinary discovery.

From the moment of arrival, Rumah Bumbu makes a confident first impression. The space is notably spacious, immaculately clean, and supported by swift, attentive service that sets the tone for what’s to come. While awaiting Cikgu Kath’s brief break from the kitchen, the menu itself sparked curiosity—featuring a selection of Indonesian dishes rarely encountered in the local scene.

Soon after, Cikgu Kath emerged with her signature warmth, welcoming us into her humble yet vibrant culinary sanctuary. It had been some time since her last collaboration with Alfred during a charity initiative, making this reunion both heartfelt and energizing. Conversations flowed effortlessly, touching on the exciting developments of the upcoming Signature Food Fest (TSFF)—where Rumah Bumbu proudly stands as a confirmed participant.

On her recommendation, we indulged in two standout selections: the Signature Soto Rumah Bumbu (Ayam) and the highly recommended Sate Lilit Bali—a dish she passionately described as a must-try. True to their promise of efficiency, the dishes arrived in under five minutes.

What followed was nothing short of delightful indulgence.

Every plate delivered bold authenticity—rich, layered flavors crafted with depth and sincerity. The ingredients spoke for themselves, vibrant and generous, leaving the table cleared in record time. It was a dining experience that felt both comforting and exciting, like rediscovering a familiar story told with new brilliance.

Rumah Bumbu operates daily from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM, and currently offers reservations and catering services, making it a versatile choice for both casual dining and curated events.

As this marks only a preview, Favstyle Essentials looks forward to a full menu exploration in the near future.

Our verdict?
A promising culinary gem with heart, heritage, and undeniable flavour.

Thank you, Cikgu Kath, for the warm hospitality and unforgettable preview.
