Sentuhan Jiwa: A Journey of Compassion and Community Care in Kudat
In the quiet coastal village of Kampung Parapat Laut in Kudat, Sabah, a meaningful initiative unfolded through Program Sentuhan Jiwa, a community service and medical charity programme dedicated to bringing care, hope and dignity to communities in need.
More than simply an outreach effort, Sentuhan Jiwa embodies a philosophy of compassion. Its vision is rooted in nurturing volunteers who are willing to serve humbly and wholeheartedly, offering their time and expertise to those who need it most. The mission is beautifully simple yet powerful: to bring comfort, support and reassurance to communities so they may feel remembered, valued and cared for.
Serving Communities Beyond the City
Kampung Parapat Laut was chosen as the location for this programme due to its remote distance from Kudat town. For many residents in the village, access to healthcare services and essential support remains limited. Through this initiative, the organisers sought to bridge that gap by bringing both medical care and humanitarian assistance directly to the community.
The programme is organised by Persatuan Sentuhan Amal Jiwa Sabah, and this particular outreach marked the 20th activity under the Sentuhan Jiwa initiative. The organisation has remained committed to conducting at least one community service programme every month as part of its continuous mission to support underserved communities.
In the previous month, the programme was held in Kampung Gansurai in Kota Belud, while the next outreach activity is scheduled to take place in Kampung Bantul, Pagalungan on 28 to 29 March 2026.
Bringing Care to the Community
The programme benefited approximately 100 to 150 residents, including around 30 children under the age of 12.
Around 20 volunteers took part in the initiative, including two medical doctors and one dental doctor, alongside volunteers from various professional backgrounds.
Adding a meaningful dimension to the programme, several winners of the King & Queen of the Pacific pageant also joined the mission. Their participation reflects the platform’s core value known as the “Heart of Giving”, encouraging titleholders to use their influence and platform to contribute to meaningful social causes.
A Day of Medical Charity and Community Engagement
Throughout the programme, residents were offered a range of basic health screenings conducted by the volunteer team. These included temperature checks, blood pressure tests, blood sugar screenings and BMI assessments. These initial screenings were followed by consultation sessions with doctors, allowing residents to receive medical advice and appropriate medication tailored to their conditions.
Dental health services were also provided through a collaboration with Smile Borneo Dental, offering residents the opportunity to receive essential oral health checks.
Beyond medical care, the programme also created space for community interaction and joyful engagement. Activities and games were organised for the village children by volunteer Hector, creating a warm and lively atmosphere that brought smiles and laughter to the day.
During the programme, Dr. Stanley Missun also took the time to speak with the children of the village, sharing encouraging messages about the importance of education and knowledge. His conversation aimed to inspire young minds to pursue learning and dream of a brighter future.
The Spirit of True Volunteerism
The dedication of the volunteers was evident throughout the programme. Many of them camped overnight at the activity site, resting on the floor in the outdoor area of the village mosque where the programme was held.
The campsite was located near the village cemetery, yet the setting did little to dampen the volunteers’ determination. Their commitment reflected a genuine spirit of service, driven by empathy and sincerity rather than comfort.
Behind the scenes, another group of volunteers focused on supporting the team by preparing meals and managing the kitchen, ensuring everyone had the energy needed to continue serving the community throughout the programme.
Interestingly, the programme took place during a meaningful period for many volunteers. Some were observing Ramadan fasting, while others were in the Lent season. Despite the physical and mental challenges that fasting can bring, the spirit of service remained unwavering. For the volunteers, the intention to help others outweighed fatigue or discomfort.
A Lesson in Humility and Leadership
Through the participation of the King & Queen of the Pacific winners, the programme also serves as a platform for cultivating deeper values of leadership and humility.
The organisers hope that the titleholders will draw inspiration from figures such as Queen Elizabeth II, who was known for personally visiting and comforting patients at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Sabah. The spirit of giving, they believe, should extend far beyond the stage and titles.
By stepping into villages such as Kampung Parapat Laut and witnessing the realities faced by communities far from urban convenience, the winners gain a deeper understanding of the world beyond glamour and recognition.
Success and opportunity are privileges not shared equally by everyone. Experiences like these nurture empathy, gratitude and a greater sense of responsibility toward society.
Sometimes, a small gesture of kindness can carry immense meaning for those facing hardship. A warm smile, a word of encouragement or a helping hand can become a source of strength for someone navigating life’s challenges.
A Heartfelt Appreciation
The organisers extend their deepest gratitude to all donors and contributors who generously provided household necessities for the villagers.
Sincere thanks are also given to the Village Head and residents of Kampung Parapat Laut for their warm cooperation and hospitality.
Most importantly, appreciation goes to every volunteer who dedicated their time and energy to support the mission of Persatuan Sentuhan Amal Jiwa Sabah, ensuring that the spirit of compassion continues to reach communities across Sabah.
Through programmes like Sentuhan Jiwa, the simple act of caring becomes a powerful reminder that humanity is at its most beautiful when people come together to uplift one another.
