Seri Masjid Terapung Syawal: Where Heritage Meets Haute Pâtisserie

In a gesture where culinary artistry meets regal reverence, Sutera Harbour unveiled an extraordinary centrepiece of celebration this Syawal season, a majestic 100-kilogram creation known as Kek Istana Syawal. Presented at the esteemed Istana Seri Kinabalu, the masterpiece was offered to His Excellency Tun Datuk Seri Panglima (Dr) Haji Musa bin Haji Aman, Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sabah, alongside Her Excellency Toh Puan Datin Seri Panglima Datuk Hajah Faridah binti Haji Tussin, marking a moment steeped in tradition, elegance, and heartfelt festivity.

Conceived and brought to life in under a week, the cake is no ordinary indulgence. Under the masterful direction of Chef Kee Roesdyen and the accomplished pastry team of The Magellan Sutera Resort, it rises as an edible tribute to Sabah’s cultural and architectural identity. Drawing inspiration from the iconic Masjid Bandaraya Likas, the design takes the form of a floating mosque resting upon an island, a poetic nod to Borneo’s geography, embraced by surrounding waters that symbolise abundance, unity, and the gentle flow of blessings during Syawal.

Every curve and contour whispers intention. The deep richness of moist chocolate forms the foundation, while intricate detailing transforms the structure into a visual symphony, where craftsmanship dances delicately between precision and imagination. It is a creation that does not merely sit on display, but rather tells a story of place, heritage, and celebration.

Leading the distinguished presentation was Deputy Chief Executive Officer Mr Gerry D’Cruz, accompanied by Group Director of Sales and Marketing Ms Elaine Kwan, General Manager of The Pacific Sutera Hotel Mr Adrian Rozario, General Manager of Sutera Harbour Marina, Golf & Country Club Mr Campbell Cowan Elliot, alongside key members of the Sutera Harbour family. Their presence underscored not just protocol, but a shared pride in delivering a gesture that resonates beyond the occasion itself.

More than a ceremonial offering, Kek Istana Syawal reflects Sutera Harbour’s enduring philosophy, where hospitality transcends service and becomes an expression of cultural appreciation. In this moment, celebration is not simply observed, it is sculpted, plated, and presented with intention, leaving behind a lingering impression as refined as the occasion it honours.
