A PENAMPANG BOY'S JOURNEY TO INTERNATIONAL KITCHENS AND BACK: THE REMARKABLE STORY OF CHEF BOBBY MELVIN GEORGE MOJINU Feature In Favstyle Magazine | Essentials by Writer On-The-Go Lorena Binisol

There is something deeply inspiring about seeing a Sabahan return home after conquering the culinary world beyond our shores. For Chef Bobby Melvin George Mojinu, the journey has been long, challenging, and rewarding, spanning more than two decades across some of Malaysia's most prestigious hospitality brands.

Today, at the age of 44, Chef Bobby stands as a seasoned culinary professional with 22 years of experience under his apron. A proud son of Kg Inobong, Penampang, his story is one of determination, resilience, and a relentless pursuit of excellence that eventually brought him back to the land he calls home.

A graduate of the Asian Tourism Institution (ATI), Chef Bobby discovered his passion for cooking early in life. After completing one and a half years of culinary studies, he embarked on his professional journey at just 19 years old. Like many young Sabahans seeking greater opportunities, he made the courageous decision to leave home and venture into Peninsular Malaysia, where bigger stages awaited.

What followed was a remarkable career spanning more than two decades in the hospitality industry. Chef Bobby honed his craft in internationally renowned hotel chains, including Shangri-La and Marriott properties across Kuala Lumpur and various states in Malaysia. Along the way, he was fortunate to work under the mentorship of an authentic Italian chef, an experience that significantly shaped his expertise in Western and Italian fine dining cuisine.

The years spent away from Sabah were not solely about perfecting recipes and mastering techniques. They were equally about developing leadership skills, managing diverse kitchen teams, and navigating the daily challenges of running high-performing culinary operations.

"Managing staff is the most challenging but also the most interesting part. Day-to-day issues teach you how to improve your style, manage people better, and refine your work," Chef Bobby shared candidly.

His experience eventually prepared him to lead fine dining establishments with confidence, authenticity, and professionalism. Yet despite his success elsewhere, the call of home remained strong.

In 2023, after settling down with his Kadazan wife, Chef Bobby made the decision to return to Sabah. Soon after, he joined Le Méridien Kota Kinabalu, bringing with him years of international experience and a wealth of knowledge in Western, Italian, and Asian cuisine.

Today, he works alongside Head Chef Ryan Poon, leading a dedicated team of assistant chefs who contribute to the hotel's culinary excellence. For Chef Bobby, leadership is not simply about directing a kitchen. It is about cultivating teamwork, nurturing talent, and creating an environment where every member can thrive.

FAVSTYLE Magazine had the privilege of witnessing Chef Bobby's expertise firsthand during The Signature Food Fest 5th Edition food judging session at Burger Box, Sheraton Kota Kinabalu.

Behind the much-talked-about Burger Box culinary experience was Chef Bobby himself, passionately introducing the concept and craftsmanship behind each creation. With infectious enthusiasm, he guided guests through the preparation process of premium burgers crafted in various flavours, demonstrating both technical precision and genuine passion for his craft.

The culinary showcase began with a warm welcome from Director of Food and Beverage, Jammaz Yassin, who eloquently introduced the dishes and beverages presented for the judging session. The experience was further complemented by insights from Director of Marketing, Tina Goh, who shared valuable information about the hotel's facilities and hospitality offerings.

As the tasting progressed, Chef Bobby once again took centre stage, carefully explaining the ingredients, preparation methods, and inspirations behind each creation. What could have been a simple food tasting evolved into an engaging culinary journey filled with stories, creativity, and dedication.

Every burger served reflected more than flavour. It reflected years of discipline, countless hours spent in professional kitchens, and a commitment to excellence that has defined Chef Bobby's career.

From the quiet village roads of Penampang to the kitchens of international hotel chains and back again, Chef Bobby Melvin George Mojinu embodies the spirit of a Sabahan who dared to dream beyond borders without forgetting his roots.

His story reminds us that success is not always about how far one travels, but rather about what one brings home after the journey.

For Sabah's culinary scene, Chef Bobby's return represents more than the homecoming of an accomplished chef. It signifies the return of world-class expertise, international standards, and a passion for culinary excellence that will continue inspiring the next generation of local talent.

Indeed, Chef Bobby's journey proves that with dedication, humility, and perseverance, a village boy from Penampang can master the flavor's of the world and proudly bring them home.
