A Stay That Stays With You Discovering the Soul of Surabaya Through the Art of Hospitality By Writer On-The-Go | Lorena Binisol for FavWrite feature in Favstyle Magazine | Essentials

Luxury is often measured in thread counts, grand lobbies, and skyline views. Yet the most memorable journeys reveal a different truth: true luxury is found in human connection.

During my recent visit to Surabaya, Indonesia's vibrant second-largest city, I discovered that some destinations leave an imprint not because of what they show, but because of how they make you feel. Nestled within the iconic Tunjungan Plaza, Four Points by Sheraton Surabaya became more than a hotel. It became a gateway into the heart and soul of East Java.

Four Points by Sheraton, Surabaya

The journey from Juanda International Airport led us through Surabaya's energetic streets, where tradition and modernity coexist in a fascinating dance. Locals affectionately refer to traffic congestion as macet, a familiar rhythm of urban life that forms part of the city's unique character. Beyond the bustling roads lies a metropolis rich with heritage, commerce, culinary treasures, and stories waiting to be discovered.

Strategically connected to one of Indonesia's most celebrated shopping destinations, Four Points by Sheraton Surabaya offers guests immediate access to the city's vibrant pulse. International brands, local boutiques, authentic culinary experiences, and contemporary lifestyle offerings converge within Tunjungan Plaza, creating a dynamic urban sanctuary for travelers.

Yet while the property delivers all the hallmarks expected of an internationally acclaimed hospitality brand, spacious accommodations, contemporary comforts, and seamless service, its greatest asset is undeniably its people.

From the moment I arrived, there was a sincerity that transcended traditional hospitality. Every interaction felt genuine, every smile heartfelt. The atmosphere was remarkably comforting, creating an experience that was pleasing not only to the eyes but deeply enriching to the spirit.

Over the course of four memorable nights, I found myself engaging in meaningful conversations with members of the hotel team. Whether at reception, the concierge desk, or throughout the property, staff members consistently demonstrated warmth, humility, and an authentic pride in sharing their culture. Their generosity with both time and stories transformed routine moments into memorable exchanges.

One particularly touching gesture exemplified this commitment to guest care. Anticipating city-wide football celebrations that would bring midnight festivities and increased noise levels, the hotel proactively placed personalized letters in guest rooms. The thoughtful note informed guests about the upcoming celebrations while extending a sincere apology for any inconvenience. It was a simple act, yet one that spoke volumes about the hotel's culture of empathy and attentiveness.

Hospitality, after all, is not about perfection. It is about sincerity.

At Four Points Surabaya, sincerity is woven into every guest experience. It is found in the welcoming smiles at breakfast, the eagerness to assist, and the quiet pride displayed by team members representing the rich traditions of Indonesia.

Breakfast each morning became an immersive cultural journey.

Naturally, I gravitated toward Indonesian cuisine, eager to discover the stories behind every dish. The culinary team enthusiastically shared the origins and significance of various local specialties, transforming each meal into a fascinating exploration of heritage and tradition.

Among the highlights was jamu, Indonesia's renowned herbal elixir crafted from turmeric, ginger, and tamarind. More than a beverage, jamu represents centuries of wellness wisdom passed through generations. Watching the preparation unfold before my eyes added an engaging layer of authenticity to the experience.

Another unforgettable favourite was the comforting soto soup, a fragrant broth enriched with noodles, herbs, vegetables, tofu, and traditional accompaniments. Each bowl reflected the warmth and complexity of Indonesian cuisine.

One of the most memorable aspects of breakfast was my interaction with Mary Magdalena, affectionately known as Lena. Across four mornings, Lena became a gracious cultural ambassador, sharing insights into Indonesian traditions while guiding me through local flavours and specialties. Alongside her colleagues, she transformed breakfast into something far greater than a meal. It became a daily lesson in culture, hospitality, and connection.

Then came an unexpected culinary discovery: fried porridge.

At first glance, the concept seemed intriguingly unconventional. Yet with one bite, I understood its appeal. Crispy on the exterior, tender within, it reimagined a familiar comfort food with creativity and flair. Enhanced with soy sauce and fresh spring onions, it became one of the most delightful culinary surprises of the trip, proving that innovation often emerges from the simplest traditions.

Each morning revealed another layer of Indonesia's rich cultural tapestry. Every conversation, every recommendation, and every shared story deepened my appreciation for the people behind the experience.

As my stay drew to a close, the warmth of the hotel team became even more evident. Lena, Daud, Valda, and many others took the time to personally bid farewell, despite their busy schedules. Photos were exchanged, social media connections established, and promises made to stay in touch beyond the confines of the hotel.

What began as a professional visit had evolved into something far more meaningful.

Even after check-out, conversations continued through Instagram, Facebook, and other digital platforms, demonstrating that hospitality at Four Points by Sheraton Surabaya extends well beyond the guest room and far beyond departure day.

My sincere gratitude goes to the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia for making this experience possible. While Surabaya's landmarks and attractions undoubtedly deserve recognition, it was ultimately the people, their kindness, openness, and genuine spirit, who transformed this journey into something truly unforgettable.

Some journeys conclude when the boarding pass is scanned and the aircraft departs.

Others remain with you long after the suitcase is unpacked.

Surabaya, experienced through the exceptional hospitality of Four Points by Sheraton, belongs firmly in the latter category.

It is a destination where hospitality is not merely a service, but a way of life. Where every gesture carries meaning. Where every encounter becomes a memory. And where travelers depart not only with photographs of places visited, but with friendships formed and stories that continue long after the journey ends.
