Padang, located on the western coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, may not yet enjoy the same level of international tourism exposure as Jakarta or Bali. However, this charming coastal city offers its own unique attractions, rich cultural heritage, and authentic culinary experiences that make it equally worthy of exploration.
Lorena Binisol, a member of the Favstyle Essentials Editorial & Content Creation Team, is currently visiting the destination as part of a tourism familiarisation initiative aimed at promoting Padang through travel storytelling and destination-focused content, courtesy of the Indonesia Consulate in Kota Kinabalu.
During a stay at the renowned Pangeran Beach Hotel, local tour guide Ahmed Ghani shared fascinating insights into the city's history, culture, and culinary traditions, offering stories and perspectives that can only be told by those who proudly call Padang home.

Among the city's most distinctive culinary traditions is Teh Talua, a beloved local beverage made from a unique combination of tea, milk, and raw egg yolk. Commonly found in coffee shops and traditional eateries throughout Padang, the drink has been enjoyed for generations and is widely believed by locals to provide energy and vitality.

Another culinary highlight is the famous Padang-style satay, known for its rich flavours and unique preparation methods. One particularly remarkable satay establishment has been operating continuously for four generations, with its origins dating back to the Dutch colonial era.

Today, the family business is managed by fourth-generation owner Iznul together with his brother Aris, who continue to preserve the treasured family recipe and traditional cooking techniques passed down through the generations. Their commitment to authenticity has ensured that the distinctive taste remains unchanged despite the passage of time.
What sets their satay apart is its rich and flavourful gravy, carefully prepared using a blend of natural herbs and aromatic spices. The result is a uniquely fragrant and deeply satisfying dish that continues to attract both loyal local patrons and curious visitors from around the world.
