There are occasions that nourish the appetite, and there are those that nourish the spirit. The Official Opening Ceremony of the Bengkel Pastri dan Kuih Talam, organised by Pertubuhan Wanita Aspirasi Sejahtera Sandakan, belonged unmistakably to the latter, where culinary artistry became an elegant expression of heritage, empowerment and community leadership.
Held at the welcoming Adzie Event Hall, Sandakan, the one-day workshop unfolded as a graceful celebration of Malaysia's treasured culinary traditions, bringing together aspiring home bakers, passionate food artisans and distinguished community leaders under one beautifully curated programme. Every moment reflected a shared commitment to preserving recipes that have travelled through generations while inspiring a new era of creativity.
The ceremony was honoured by the presence of YBhg Datuk Dg Haja Khatijah @ Balbangsa Binti Datu Bactiyal, whose official opening marked not merely the commencement of a workshop, but a meaningful affirmation of women's vital role in safeguarding cultural identity through culinary excellence.
The morning commenced with the dignified arrival of participants, followed by the stirring rendition of Negaraku and Sabah Tanah Airku, creating a patriotic atmosphere that united everyone in shared purpose. A heartfelt opening prayer by Tuan Ustaz Muhammad Jalil Ahmad added a moment of reflection before the proceedings continued with welcoming remarks from YBhg Datin Hjh Khatizah Polo, Chairperson of Pertubuhan Wanita Aspirasi Sejahtera Sandakan.

Certificates and appreciation tokens were presented in recognition of both achievement and commitment, before the day concluded with a memorable group photography session.
More than a culinary workshop, the Bengkel Pastri dan Kuih Talam stood as a celebration of cultural continuity and women's empowerment. It demonstrated that heritage is not preserved within museum walls, but flourishes in kitchens, classrooms and communities where knowledge is generously shared and traditions continue to evolve.
For FAVSTYLE Magazine, this inspiring initiative exemplifies how gastronomy extends beyond flavour to become a powerful medium for education, entrepreneurship and cultural diplomacy. In an age of rapidly changing lifestyles, programmes such as these remind us that the most enduring luxuries are authenticity, craftsmanship and the timeless joy of passing treasured traditions from one generation to the next.
