On an enchanting evening beneath the vibrant atmosphere of Lintasan Deasoka, Kota Kinabalu celebrated more than the launch of a cultural programme. It unveiled a vision for the future.

Citra Budaya Kota Kinabalu – "KK Culture on Stage 2026" was officially launched on 4 July 2026, marking a significant milestone in Sabah's cultural tourism landscape. The official speech, prepared for YB Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister and Minister Responsible for Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK), was delivered by YBhg. Dato' Sri Dr. Haji Sabin Samitah, Mayor of Kota Kinabalu, before government leaders, tourism stakeholders, cultural practitioners, media representatives and members of the public.




The initiative represents a strategic collaboration between Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) and the Sabah Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment (KePKAS), serving as one of the flagship cultural programmes supporting Visit Malaysia 2026 while laying the foundation for Visit Sabah 2027.

Sabah has long been recognised as one of Southeast Asia's richest cultural destinations, home to more than thirty indigenous ethnic communities, each contributing distinctive traditions, artistry, languages and customs that have shaped the state's remarkable identity.

The launch speech emphasised that cultural preservation extends far beyond safeguarding history. It requires continuous celebration, active participation and meaningful engagement with younger generations. It was a very fulfilling and insightful trip to Keningau recently, where the Angin family from Kg. Biah, Sook celebrated an important engagement ceremony. A family member was engaged to someone from outside the Murut community. Shonney Doney, who is of Murut and Dusun heritage, became engaged to a Sino-Kadazan young man from outside the Keningau district.
