Lun Bawang Heritage Shines in a Night of Unity and Culture - By Writer On-The-Go : Lorena Binisol
The Lun Bawang community in Sabah, though modest in number, demonstrated a powerful commitment to preserving their cultural legacy through the successful staging of Night of Culture at The Klagan Hotel.
Organized by Pertubuhan Kebudayaan dan Kesenian Lun Bawang Sabah (PKKLBS), the event gathered over 250 members in a vibrant celebration of heritage, unity, and tradition. The evening unfolded like a living tapestry of identity, where every performance echoed stories passed down through generations.
Audiences were captivated by traditional dances such as Tarian Alai Bunga Arang and Rong Metaga, each movement carrying the rhythm of ancestral roots and the spirit of the highlands.
The event was graced by Guest of Honour Noemi Dyena Johntren, President of the Penampang Municipal Council, whose address underscored the importance of cultural preservation and active community engagement within Sabah’s diverse social fabric.
Under the leadership of PKKLBS President Othnel Yabai and Deputy President Simon Chia, the programme served as more than just a cultural showcase. It became a meaningful platform for strengthening bonds within the Lun Bawang community while sharing their traditions with a wider audience.
The evening stood as a reminder that heritage is not static. It breathes through people, celebrations, and collective memory. Efforts like these align with broader cultural initiatives championed by organizations such as Kadazandusun Cultural Association, reinforcing the importance of safeguarding indigenous identity for future generations.
Originally from the highlands of Borneo, the Lun Bawang people have since established communities across Sarawak, Sabah, and Brunei. Despite geographical shifts, their cultural essence remains intact, carried forward through events like this that celebrate both roots and resilience.
