Enduring Bonds and Festive Cheer Reconnecting in the spirit of Chinese New Year and celebrating friendships that stand the test of time.

By Adjunct Prof. Jessie Jung

The Chinese New Year season always brings meaningful opportunities to reconnect, and I was pleased to attend a recent open house hosted by Dr. Carmen Wong. Having known Carmen for more than 22 years, it was especially heartening to gather once again in a relaxed and festive atmosphere, celebrating not only the arrival of the new year but also friendships that have grown and endured across many seasons of life and professional development.

Over the years, our paths have crossed in various professional and community platforms. More recently, our collaboration has continued through the Sabah Plumber Association, where Carmen serves as President and I contribute as Advisor. While roles and responsibilities naturally evolve, what remains constant is the trust and mutual respect built through long-standing engagement. Festive gatherings such as this offer a welcome pause from formal commitments, allowing us to reconnect beyond meetings and agendas, and to appreciate the relationships that quietly sustain collaboration throughout the year.

It was also a pleasure to see familiar faces from the wider community, including Carl Victor Moosom and MeLy Loh, along with many others who continue to contribute meaningfully within their respective fields. Occasions like this bring together individuals from diverse backgrounds and experiences, reinforcing the informal networks that often underpin broader professional and community initiatives.

Beyond the celebratory setting, what stood out most to me was the sense of continuity, friendships that have matured over decades, conversations that resume naturally despite busy schedules, and shared hopes for steady and constructive progress in the year ahead. The warmth and hospitality extended during the open house reflected the spirit of the festive season: gracious, inclusive, and grounded.

The afternoon was filled with light-hearted exchanges and sincere well-wishes, a gentle reminder that community building is not limited to formal structures. Sometimes, it is through these simple gatherings that understanding deepens and goodwill is strengthened.

As we step into the new year, may we continue to nurture enduring friendships, support one another’s contributions, and move forward with steadiness, resilience, and optimism.
