REMEMBERING AUSTRALIA A Friendship Etched in the Heart of Kota Kinabalu feature in FAVSTYLE Media Magazine

In Kota Kinabalu, a new landmark is quietly telling one such story.

On 14 August 2026, Australian High Commissioner to Malaysia HE Danielle Heinecke, alongside Mayor of Kota Kinabalu YBhg Dato’ Sri Dr Haji Sabin bin Samitah and Pillars of Sabah Co-founder Jared Abdul Rahman, unveiled the “Remembering Australia Place” mural at Lorong Dewan, an area affectionately known as Australia Place.

More than a colourful work of public art, the mural represents a shared chapter in the histories of Australia and Malaysia, connecting the present generation with memories forged at the end of the Second World War.

WHERE HISTORY MEETS ART

Created through a collaborative effort involving local artists from Pillars of Sabah, together with teachers and students from SMK Sanzac Kota Kinabalu, the mural transforms a familiar urban space into a living canvas of remembrance.

Its significance reaches beyond aesthetics.

The artwork commemorates the enduring friendship between Australia and Malaysia, particularly the historical connection formed when Australian troops played a role in helping rebuild Kota Kinabalu following the devastation of World War II.

Decades later, that chapter has been translated into colour, creativity and community.

A PLACE OF REMEMBRANCE

Lorong Dewan has long carried its informal identity as Australia Place, and the mural gives that identity a renewed cultural presence.

For visitors, it offers a visual encounter with history. For local residents, it becomes another piece of Kota Kinabalu's evolving cultural landscape. For younger generations, it provides an opportunity to discover a story that might otherwise remain confined to history books.

There is something particularly powerful about that idea: history does not always need a grand monument. Sometimes, it needs a wall, a brushstroke and a community willing to remember.
