FROM FINANCE TO THE SPOTLIGHT Jhon’s Evolution Through Communication, Confidence & Connection By FAVSTYLE Media Magazine
There are careers that follow a straight line, and then there are careers shaped by curiosity, courage and the willingness to ask, What comes next?
For Jhon, the answer began with a microphone.
After nearly a decade in the finance industry, Jhon reached a defining moment as he approached 30. His professional life had been built around numbers, client relationships and meetings, but beneath the structure of finance was another skill that had quietly been developing since his teenage years: the ability to communicate, connect and command a room.
The microphone had always been there. He simply had not yet realised where it could take him.
WHEN THE MICROPHONE BECAME A CAREER
Long before emceeing became a profession, Jhon was already volunteering as an emcee for weddings, church programmes, NGO activities and various events. Being on stage felt natural, yet he initially regarded it as something he enjoyed rather than a career.
That perspective changed when he began reflecting on the strengths he had accumulated through his years of working with people.
He recognized that engaging an audience was not merely a talent. It was a craft.
Taking the leap, Jhon began marketing his emcee services professionally. What started as a side pursuit gradually revealed an entire industry, one where stage presence, timing, improvisation, audience engagement and adaptability were not optional extras, but essential disciplines.
He discovered that emceeing could be a serious profession, and more importantly, he discovered that there was always another level to master.
THE DISCIPLINE BEHIND THE STAGE
Jhon's pursuit of growth eventually brought him to Toastmasters International in 2019, where he found a structured environment to refine his public-speaking abilities, receive feedback and learn from fellow communicators.
The experience expanded his understanding of communication beyond simply speaking well.
It introduced leadership, discipline and the importance of continuous practice.
His journey eventually led him to serve as President of the Kota Kinabalu Toastmasters Club, the oldest Toastmasters club in Sabah, before taking on his current role as Toastmasters District 81 Area K1 Director.
Today, communication is not only something Jhon practises himself. It is something he shares.
Through public-speaking and communication training, he helps others become more confident and effective when standing before an audience. His philosophy is shaped by experience: the stage teaches you to engage, Toastmasters teaches you to refine, and teaching allows those lessons to travel further.
FROM KOTA KINABALU TO THE MALAYSIAN STAGE
The journey that began in Kota Kinabalu has since taken Jhon across Malaysia.
From Kota Kinabalu to Kuching and Kuala Lumpur, he has hosted weddings, corporate functions, dinners, conferences, launches, roadshows and a diverse range of events.
No two audiences are identical.
No two rooms carry the same energy.
And no event ever unfolds entirely according to plan.
That unpredictability is precisely what makes the profession compelling.
For Jhon, a great emcee is not simply someone who speaks between programmed segments. It is someone who understands the room, reads the audience, manages momentum and responds gracefully when the unexpected arrives.
Interestingly, the lessons from his first career remain firmly embedded in his second.
Finance taught him how to work with clients, communicate with different personalities, build trust and understand what people need. On stage, those same qualities have become part of his professional signature.
The career changed. The people skills evolved with it.
BEYOND THE MICROPHONE
But Jhon's communication journey does not end when the stage lights go down.
His curiosity has increasingly moved towards content creation, video editing and storytelling, allowing him to explore communication through another powerful medium: the screen.
He sees digital content not simply as a creative hobby, but as a natural extension of modern communication.
Businesses and professionals are increasingly telling their own stories, promoting their products and building their identities through video and digital platforms. For Jhon, that shift represents not a disruption, but an opportunity to keep learning.
Rather than waiting for the future of communication to arrive, he is preparing for it now.
Experimenting with video. Exploring storytelling. Developing editing skills. Continuing to sharpen his ability to communicate.
EVOLUTION IS THE REAL CAREER
Jhon's story is ultimately not about leaving finance behind.
It is about recognizing that every chapter can prepare you for the next.
The confidence developed through client meetings became useful on stage. The discipline of professional life became part of his communication journey. The microphone eventually led towards training, leadership, content creation and storytelling.
Different platforms. One central purpose.
Connection.
From the numbers of finance to the energy of a live audience, from the microphone to the camera, Jhon continues to evolve with the way people communicate.
And perhaps that is the most compelling part of his journey.
Because in a world where the platform is constantly changing, the ability to connect with people remains timeless.
The microphone may have opened the door. Communication became the journey.
