BENZIE SINTON - Where Sabah’s Natural Heritage Meets Contemporary Design

From the heart of Kiulu, Tuaran, a new creative perspective is emerging through the artistry of Dalai, a traditional natural material reimagined for modern design.

Rooted in the cultural landscape of Kiulu, Tuaran, Benzie Sinton is a handicraft maker and local designer exploring the meeting point between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary creativity. Through the use of Dalai, Benzie brings a distinctive material from Sabah’s heritage into a modern design language, celebrating the enduring connection between nature, culture and personal expression.

For Benzie, design is more than an exercise in aesthetics. It is an opportunity to preserve and reinterpret the traditions that shape a community’s identity. Dalai, recognised within the local context as a natural bead and herb, holds a place in traditional jewellery-making, particularly in Kiulu. By incorporating this material into creative designs, Benzie seeks to present its cultural significance through fresh and contemporary perspectives.

A Journey Shaped by Craftsmanship

Benzie’s formal journey into the world of fashion and handicrafts began in 2019, when the designer enrolled in a basic sewing programme at Pusat Warisan Kraf, under Kolej Teknikal Yayasan Sabah. This foundation marked an important step towards developing the practical skills and creative understanding needed to explore design.

Although still growing within the field, Benzie has already participated in several competitions involving Dalai-related handicrafts and creative fashion. These experiences have contributed to an evolving design journey, encouraging further exploration of natural materials, traditional influences and innovative ways of presenting cultural identity.

Preserving Heritage Through Modern Expression

An essential part of Benzie’s approach is collaboration with the community, particularly the komuniti penggiat Dalai Sabah, whose involvement helps sustain awareness of Dalai and its traditional uses.

This connection reinforces a meaningful principle: heritage remains relevant when it continues to inspire new generations of makers and designers. By bringing Dalai into modern and creative applications, Benzie contributes to a wider conversation about the value of local materials, indigenous traditions and Sabah’s evolving creative landscape.

Each design exploration becomes an opportunity to look back at cultural roots while imagining new possibilities for the future.

A Distinctive Voice from Kiulu

Benzie Sinton’s creative journey reflects the potential of local craftsmanship to move beyond convention without losing its cultural foundation. Through a continuing exploration of Dalai, traditional jewellery influences and contemporary design, Benzie is developing a personal approach that honours both place and heritage.

For Sabah’s creative community, stories such as Benzie’s serve as a reminder that distinctive design identities can emerge from the materials, traditions and communities closest to home.

Benzie Sinton represents a growing creative spirit in Sabah, where natural materials become a canvas for cultural storytelling and tradition finds renewed expression through contemporary design.
