Domestic Journeys, Real Choices By Mr Alfred Allen, Editor-in-Chief

As a Sabahan who travels frequently between Kota Kinabalu and Peninsular Malaysia, I often get asked a simple but layered question: In 2026, should we travel domestic or international? My answer is not romantic, but it is honest. Before we chase borders, currencies, and passports, we should look closely at what our own country already offers and how intelligently we travel within it.

From Kota Kinabalu to Kuala Lumpur and onward to George Town, domestic travel in 2026 is not a compromise. It is a strategic choice.

Why domestic travel still makes sense in 2026

Domestic routes from BKI to KUL and Penang are mature, frequent, and competitively priced. For Sabahans, this means less friction, shorter planning cycles, and more control over budget and time. When schedules are tight or travel is purpose-driven — work, family, short breaks — domestic travel delivers consistency.

International travel still has its place, of course. But it demands more planning, higher costs, and tolerance for uncertainty. In contrast, a domestic trip allows you to travel light, move fast, and focus on experience rather than logistics.

Choosing the right airline: practicality over loyalty

For Sabah travellers, airline choice should be rational, not emotional.

  • AirAsia
Efficient, frequent, and aggressively priced. Ideal for short trips, solo travellers, and those comfortable traveling lean.

  • Malaysia Airlines
Better for comfort, baggage clarity, and business-style travel. A strong option when timing and reliability matter more than price.

  • Firefly
Often overlooked, but useful for specific schedules and a quieter travel experience.

My rule is simple: choose the airline that serves your purpose, not your ego.

Budget travel or trend travel?

Choose intention first.

Budget travel is about discipline. Trend travel is about desire. In 2026, the smartest travellers will mix both.

Save on flights and accommodation where possible. Spend deliberately on one meaningful experience — a great meal, a cultural tour, or a unique stay. This balance keeps travel rewarding without becoming financially exhausting.

Family trip or solo journey?

Both are valid, but they serve different seasons of life.

  • Family travel works exceptionally well in Kuala Lumpur and Penang. Attractions are structured, food is accessible, and transport is reliable.

  • Solo travel thrives on flexibility. Penang’s walkability and KL’s urban rhythm make them ideal for independent exploration.

Ask yourself what you need more in 2026: shared memory or personal clarity.

KL alone or KL plus Genting Highlands?

KL is the anchor city — shopping, dining, art, business, culture.
But Genting Highlands adds contrast.

For first-time or short trips, stay within Kuala Lumpur.
For repeat visitors or family itineraries, Genting provides altitude, entertainment, and a sense of pause. It should be an extension, not a distraction.

Top 5 challenges Sabah travellers should anticipate

  1. Flight delays during peak seasons
Plan buffers. Avoid tight same-day commitments.

  2. Hidden costs in low fares
Baggage, seats, and meals add up. Always calculate total cost.

  3. Overcrowding during long weekends
Book early or travel slightly off-peak.

  4. Urban fatigue
KL can overwhelm. Balance malls with parks, cafés, or short excursions.

  5. Decision fatigue, especially in Penang
Too many food choices dilute the experience. Curate your meals.

Preparation does not reduce spontaneity. It protects it.

My top 10 considerations before booking any trip

  1. Purpose of travel

  2. Time available

  3. Total budget, not just airfare

  4. Airline schedule reliability

  5. Accommodation location

  6. Ground transport plan

  7. Weather and season

  8. Travel companions

  9. One must-do experience

  10. A flexible mindset

Final thought from the editor’s desk

In 2026, travel should not be about chasing destinations. It should be about choosing wisely.

For Sabahans, domestic travel remains a powerful option — efficient, culturally rich, and deeply rewarding. Kuala Lumpur and Penang are not secondary choices. When traveled with intention, they are complete stories.

Travel less impulsively. Travel more meaningfully.
That, to me, is the real luxury of 2026.
